What is Skin Cancer?
Skin cancer begins when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. The main cell types in the epidermis are:
Squamous cells: Thin, flat cells on the surface.
Basal cells: Round cells beneath the squamous layer.
Melanocytes: Cells that produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color.
Skin cancer can develop anywhere but is most often found on areas exposed to the sun, including the face, neck, and hands.
Types of Skin Cancer
Nonmelanoma Skin Cancers
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common type, usually found on sun-exposed areas like the nose. It may look pearly, scar-like, or waxy.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Typically appears as firm, red bumps or crusty patches on sun-damaged skin. SCC may spread to nearby lymph nodes.
Actinic Keratosis: A precancerous condition that appears as rough, scaly patches and can develop into squamous cell carcinoma.
Melanoma
Melanoma is less common but more aggressive. It develops in melanocytes and is more likely to spread to other parts of the body.
Risk Factors
Factors that may increase the risk of developing skin cancer include:
Prolonged sun exposure or use of tanning beds.
Fair skin that burns easily, light-colored eyes, red or blond hair.
History of sunburns.
Family or personal history of skin cancer or atypical moles.

Signs and Symptoms

Cracked or peeling lips that do not heal with balm.
Skin cancers are most common on areas exposed to sunlight, such as the nose, ears, lower lip, and hands.

Skin Exam: Checking for abnormal spots, bumps, or growths.
Skin Biopsy: Removing tissue for microscopic examination. Types include shave biopsy, punch biopsy, incisional biopsy, and excisional biopsy.
Stages of Skin Cancer
Staging helps determine how far cancer has spread and guides treatment:
Stage 0: Abnormal cells present, but not invasive.
Stage I: Tumor 2 cm or smaller.
Stage II: Tumor larger than 2 cm but smaller than 4 cm.
Stage III: Tumor larger than 4 cm or spreading to nearby tissues or lymph nodes.
Stage IV: Cancer has spread to lymph nodes, bone, or other organs.
Staging is different for cancers found on the eyelid compared to those on other areas of the head and neck.
