What Are the Symptoms of Psoriasis?
Psoriasis symptoms can vary from person to person. Common signs and symptoms include:
Red skin patches covered with thick, silvery scales
Small scaling spots (more common in children)
Dry, cracked skin that may itch or bleed
Itching, burning, or soreness
Thickened, pitted, or ridged nails
Swollen and stiff joints
Lesions can range from small spots to large eruptions covering wider areas. The most commonly affected regions are the lower back, elbows, knees, legs, soles of the feet, scalp, face, and palms.
What Causes Psoriasis?
The exact cause of psoriasis is not fully understood and may differ from one person to another. However, research identifies two main factors:
Immune System
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder, where white blood cells mistakenly attack healthy skin cells. This leads to an overproduction of skin cells, causing them to build up under the skin’s surface. As these cells move upward too quickly, they form plaques and inflamed red patches, one of the hallmark features of psoriasis.
Genetic Factors
Psoriasis can also be inherited. Having a close relative with psoriasis significantly increases the risk of developing the condition.
Types of Psoriasis
Plaque Psoriasis
The most common type, characterized by raised, red patches covered with silvery-white scales. These plaques are often itchy or painful and usually appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.
Nail Psoriasis
Affects fingernails and toenails, causing pitting, abnormal growth, discoloration, and separation of the nail from the nail bed (onycholysis). Severe cases may lead to nail crumbling.
Guttate Psoriasis
Common in children and young adults, often triggered by bacterial infections such as strep throat. It appears as small, drop-shaped, scaly lesions on the trunk, arms, and legs.
Inverse Psoriasis
Develops in skin folds, such as the groin, buttocks, or under the breasts. It causes smooth, red patches that worsen with friction and sweating. Fungal infections may also trigger flare-ups.
Pustular Psoriasis
A rare form marked by white pustules (blisters filled with pus) surrounded by inflamed skin. It may appear in localized areas like the palms and soles.
Erythrodermic Psoriasis
The least common but most severe type, covering the entire body with a widespread, red, itchy, and burning rash. It can be life-threatening and requires urgent medical care.
Psoriatic Arthritis
A condition where psoriasis is accompanied by joint inflammation, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling. Severe cases may cause permanent joint damage.
Risk Factors for Psoriasis
Psoriasis can develop at any age, though about one-third of cases begin in childhood. Main risk factors include:
Family history: Having one or both parents with psoriasis increases risk.
Stress: Prolonged stress can weaken the immune system and trigger flare-ups.
Smoking: Not only increases risk but also worsens severity.
Environmental factors: Cold, dry weather and skin injuries can provoke symptoms.
Other triggers: Infections, alcohol consumption, and sudden withdrawal from certain medications.
Complications of Psoriasis
People with psoriasis are at greater risk of developing:
Psoriatic arthritis
Eye problems such as conjunctivitis
Obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases
Other autoimmune conditions, including Crohn’s disease and celiac disease
Mental health issues such as low self-esteem and depression
Treatment of Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic condition with no permanent cure, but treatments can help control symptoms and reduce flare-ups. Common treatment approaches include:
Topical treatments: Corticosteroid creams, vitamin D analogs, coal tar, or moisturizers to reduce scaling and inflammation.
Phototherapy: Controlled exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light to slow down skin cell turnover.
Systemic medications: For severe cases, oral or injectable drugs such as methotrexate, cyclosporine, or biologics may be prescribed.
